Optimizing Fragrance Selection with Biometrics for a global fragrance company
A global leader in fragrance manufacturing contacted the iMotions Consultancy Team, because they sought to identify the most suitable scents for a new women’s shampoo line. With 20 candidate fragrances, the client aimed to determine which scents were most “exciting,” “calming,” or aversive, to ensure the final product resonated with consumers on both conscious and non-conscious levels.
To achieve this, our client wished to incorporate biometric tools into their regular fragrance testing process. Using Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) to measure physiological arousal, Facial Expression Analysis to capture emotional reactions, and self-reports for subjective experiences, we were able to assess how participants responded to each fragrance. A diverse group of 20 female participants, aged 21-45, tested the fragrances in a controlled environment. After smelling each fragrance, participants rated likability, familiarity, purchase intent, and intensity, providing both emotional and cognitive feedback.
Key Findings
Through our biometric analysis, we were able to provide the client with a concise overview of which fragrances were identified as either energizing, calming, or aversive:
- Exciting Fragrances: 3 fragrances were found to be the most activating, making them ideal for energizing products, such as those with citrus or peppermint notes.
- Calming Fragrances: 3 fragrances were identified as the most calming, recommended for relaxing products like those with lavender or chamomile, which promote relaxation and relieve anxiety.
- Aversive Fragrances: 4 fragrances were deemed intrusive, eliciting high arousal paired with disgust reactions. These scents were recommended to be removed from further consideration.
iMotions’ biometric analysis helped the client refine their fragrance selection by identifying scents that align with their goals of excitement and relaxation, while also filtering out those that elicited negative responses. This approach provided the client with a data-driven strategy to create a fragrance line that resonates with their target audience.
Solutions Case Study: Evaluating FMCG Point-of-Sale Materials with Eye Tracking
A leading global FMCG company contacted the iMotions Consultancy Team, because they sought to optimize the brand visibility in a retail space of one of their oral care brands for individuals with sensitive teeth. They had introduced new point-of-sale materials (POSM) to enhance the visibility and engagement of their products at the retail shelf. The aim of this study was to understand how the new POSM influenced shopper behavior and whether it successfully directed visual attention toward the Clients products compared to competitor brands.
Participants in the study were equipped with eye-tracking glasses as they browsed the oral care section of a store, mimicking a natural shopping experience. Their gaze patterns were recorded to capture how the presence of POSM affected their visual attention and engagement with the products.
Key Findings:
- POSM Drives Rapid Attention to the Clients Products: The study showed that the presence of POSM helped the Company’s products stand out. Shoppers were immediately drawn to their brand when POSM was present, while in scenarios without POSM, competitor products tended to capture attention first.
- Shoppers Spend Less Time on Competitor Products with POSM: When the Client’s POSM was displayed, participants spent 25% less time looking at competitor products. This indicates that the POSM effectively redirected shopper focus toward the client brand, reducing engagement with rival brands.
- POSM Creates a Stronger Brand Connection: The study revealed a “halo effect,” where the presence of POSM not only improved visibility but also helped reinforce the Client’s brand presence, making it easier for shoppers to connect with the brand as they navigated the shelf.
- Complete Exploration of POSM: Although the POSM wasn’t always the first thing noticed, all participants eventually explored the entire client-brand wing display. This suggests that shoppers were engaged enough to interact with the various elements of the POSM.
- Product Imagery Overshadows Text Messaging: While the POSM was effective in capturing attention, most of the visual focus was on the product imagery, rather than the text. This indicates that the size and placement of the text may need to be optimized to ensure key messaging isn’t overlooked.
Conclusion:
The study demonstrated that POSM is an effective tool for driving attention to the Clients products and reducing the visibility of competitor brands. However, the messaging on the POSM could be optimized to ensure that important information is communicated more clearly. Overall, the Client’s POSM successfully enhanced brand visibility and improved shopper engagement at the shelf, reinforcing the brand’s presence in a competitive retail space.
Case Study: Enhancing Airline Website Usability with Biometrics
A major airline sought to evaluate the usability of various airline websites to gain insights into how consumers naturally navigate and interact with them. The study, conducted with iMotions Solution Team, compared the web usability of three major airlines: Southwest, Spirit, and Virgin America. Participants were asked to complete specific tasks on each website, including finding flight destinations, understanding baggage fees, and making a flight selection. The objective was to assess task completion efficiency, emotional engagement, and the overall user journey.
In the study, 50% male and 50% female participants, aged 21-45, were selected based on their recent experience purchasing domestic flights. The participants were outfitted with wrist-based Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) devices to measure physiological arousal, and cameras tracked their facial expressions and eye movements as they navigated the sites. Participants encountered the websites in a randomized order and performed the same tasks on each.
Findings
The study revealed important insights into user experience across the three airline websites. Virgin America’s simple, streamlined layout was associated with faster task completion, lower frustration levels, and a higher likelihood of participants following the most optimal navigation path. This suggests that minimalist design may lead to a more user-friendly experience, reducing information overload and helping users achieve their goals more efficiently.
In contrast, the study highlighted the importance of brand perception and marketing. Spirit’s “bare fare” and Southwest’s “bags fly free” promotions shaped user expectations, influencing how participants approached the tasks. Preconceived notions about these airlines affected navigation patterns, demonstrating that a user’s prior understanding of a brand plays a significant role in their online behavior.
Finally, the research showed that websites offering multiple paths to complete tasks led to varying navigation strategies. While having several options can be beneficial for users, it also introduces the need to curate and optimize each possible path to ensure consistency and ease of use across the site.
Through biometric insights and behavioral analysis, iMotions provided the airline with actionable data to enhance their website usability, making online experiences smoother, more intuitive, and aligned with consumer expectations.
