Welcome to iMotions!
iMotions is a human behavior research software company. Since our founding in 2005 in Copenhagen, we have helped universities and companies around the world understand the drivers behind human behavior through software development, guidance and collaboration.
What we do
iMotions is not a single product but an ecosystem of software products built around multimodal research, and the principle that behavior is best understood by combining multiple synchronized biosensor data sources rather than analyzing one signal in isolation. Our platforms let researchers design studies, present stimuli, and collect, synchronize, visualize, and analyze behavioral and physiological metrics in one place. The portfolio includes:
- iMotions Lab: our flagship desktop suite for controlled, lab-based, and field studies.
- iMotions Online: browser- and cloud-based data collection from participants’ own devices, anywhere in the world.
- iMotions Education (iMotions Online sub-product): browser-based tools for teaching and academic training.
Alongside these platforms, we offer a group of integrated products that let researchers and developers forward data in real time, import external data, and extend or embed iMotions within their own workflows.
We currently offer the following integrated products:
- Affectiva Facial Expression SDK– Incorporate Real-Time Emotion Sensing In Digital Experiences and Applications
- Affectiva Facial Expression API – Provides you with an easy way of getting AI powered facial coding metrics for any video
- Affectiva Emotion SDK for Android.
- Affectiva Predictive AI (coming soon)
- audEERNG devAIce SDK (coming soon)
iMotions Research Services
In addition to our software solutions, iMotions offers research services for organizations that need project-based support or are not yet ready to invest in a dedicated iMotions Lab setup.
Whether you’re interested in conducting a one-off study, exploring the value of biometric research through a pilot project, or accessing specialized expertise without building an in-house research capability, our Services team can help.
Our team consists of experienced researchers with backgrounds in neuroscience, consumer neuroscience, human behavior, and experimental design. They can design and execute studies using the same methodologies and technologies available across iMotions Lab, iMotions Online, and Affectiva Media Analytics.
From consumer insights and UX research to human factors, advertising testing, and academic research, our services provide a flexible way to access the full capabilities of the iMotions ecosystem, without the commitment of purchasing and operating a complete research lab.

How it works
Our software is fully hardware-agnostic, integrating and time-synchronizing 50+ sensors from 20+ partners. We call each type of signal a modality, which constitutes a distinct channel for measuring human response. Combining several of them is what we mean by multimodal research, because no single signal explains behavior on its own: one shows where attention goes, another whether arousal rises, another how the body or face reacts. The modalities we support include:
- Eye Tracking: where people look and for how long (screen-based, VR, glasses, and webcam).
- Facial Expression Analysis (FEA): emotional expressions read from facial movements.
- EDA / GSR: electrodermal activity (skin conductance), reflecting emotional arousal.
- EEG: electroencephalography, measuring brain activity.
- ECG: electrocardiography, measuring heart activity.
- EMG: electromyography, measuring muscle activity.
- fNIRS: functional near-infrared spectroscopy, measuring blood-oxygenation in the brain.
- Respiration: breathing patterns.
- Voice Analysis: emotional and acoustic cues in speech.
- Motion Capture: body movement and kinematics.
- GPS: location and movement in the field.
- Surveys: self-reported responses, captured alongside the biosensor data.
More devices can be connected through the Lab Streaming Layer and our API. The result is a single, synchronized picture of how people respond, emotionally, physiologically, and cognitively, in real time.
Who we work with
We work with both academic and commercial researchers across market research, neuromarketing, UX and usability, automotive, health and wellbeing, education, ergonomics, and media. Our platforms are used by 9 of the 10 top-ranked universities, including Harvard, Yale, MIT, and Stanford, and by leading companies such as GSK, P&G, Unilever, BMW, and Duracell.
What sets us apart
Rather than locking researchers into one vendor’s hardware or a single signal, we bring the industry’s most diverse range of biosensors into one synchronized platform, covering the full workflow from study design through collection to analysis. It’s an end-to-end, multimodal approach backed by science.
Our people and the relationships we build
Behind the software is a team of experienced, seasoned, experts and PhDs consisting of product specialists, developers, customer success managers and support specialists who all understand both the technology and the research it is tailor-made to serve.
When you work with iMotions, you’re not left to figure it out alone, because our entire team helps you set up and configure your sensors, advice on how to design solid studies, and troubleshoot along the way, with guidance tailored to your methodology. That hands-on support is a large part of why so many of our customers stay with us (99% satisfaction rating), leveraging iMotions project after project and growing into long, lasting relationships built on trust and shared success.
Company
iMotions A/S was founded in 2005 by Peter Hartzbech and is headquartered in Copenhagen, with offices in Boston, Berlin, and Sydney. We were acquired by Smart Eye in 2021 and operate within its human behavior research division; in 2025, Affectiva joined iMotions under the same division, strengthening our AI and emotion-analysis capabilities.
Beyond our own offices, we work with a network of selling partners who resell and support iMotions locally. We currently have resellers in China, Japan, South Korea, India, Poland, Romania, and Ukraine, alongside global partners.
