iMotions 11: Two Decades of Innovation – Built for What Comes Next

iMotions 11 marks twenty years of groundbreaking innovation in research technology. This latest iteration is designed to meet the evolving needs of researchers and businesses alike, providing advanced tools for data collection and analysis. Discover how iMotions continues to shape the future of emotion measurement and human behavior research.

After twenty years at the forefront of human behavior research, we’re proud to announce the release of iMotions 11 – a major milestone that represents not just a version update, but the culmination of two decades of innovation, collaboration, and commitment to scientific progress.

iMotions 11 is designed for what comes next. As researchers face new challenges across neuroscience, UX, mental health, education, and beyond, this release delivers  the speed, flexibility and intelligence that today’s science demands.

With faster workflows, smarter automation, more flexible integrations, iMotions 11 gives deeper, clearer insights, all in one place. It’s built to meet researchers where they are, and to support them as they push into new territory.

From the beginning our mission has been simple, yet bold, to truly measure the layers of human behaviour in real time, across disciplines” says Peter Hartzbech, CEO and Founder at iMotions.

This launch coincides with a major milestone, iMotions’ 20th anniversary. A moment to celebrate two decades of innovation and look forward to the next. For 20 years we have helped researchers uncover the hidden layers of human behaviour and now with iMotions 11 we are building the tools that will power the next generation of discovery.

What’s New in iMotions 11

The release of iMotions 11 redefines what’s possible in multimodal research. This release is not only about adding features, it is equally about streamlining the user experience from start to finish, so that researchers can spend less time configuring tools, and more time doing great science.

Performance

  • Faster and more responsive, even with larger multimodal datasets
  • A redesign in the survey tool with improved skip logic, multimedia support, and flexible styling – for both lab and remote studies.
  • AOI creation tool for cleaner and more dynamic data mapping and error handling

Expanded modalities

  • Native fNIRS integration enabling researchers to capture brain oxygenation data. This opens up new possibilities for studies that blend neural and behavioral data, of course, without needing external preprocessing tools

Smarter analysis

  • An upgraded Facial Expression Analysis module now featuring adaptive engagement metrics, speech detection, and Multiface Analysis, allowing simultaneous emotional tracking across multiple participants.

Data visualization

  • A new customizable dashboard allows researchers to keep every signal in view without losing focus or clarity – built to handle multiple data types

Racing Toward Possibility: Demo Studies

To mark the launch of iMotions 11 and put the platform to the test, we created two demo studies – one digital and one real world. Both were designed to show what becomes possible when biometric research is intuitive and adaptable.

Mario Kart Study: Inside the game

In the controlled digital environment, we measured engagement using eye tracking and facial expression analysis to examine how attention and emotion interact during gameplay. In a second phase, we expanded the sensor setup to include ECG, respiration, voice, and gaze data to explore participants’ responses to surprising moments – like crashes. This layered approach offered a deeper view of both physiological arousal and emotional reaction in context.

Gokart study: From the lab to the track

The second demo took the research outdoors to a GoKart track. Participants wore eye tracking glasses and were monitored using ECG, respiration, GPS, and voice recordings. The goal was to move beyond performance stats like lap times and understand the driver’s experience, how focus, stress, and emotion unfold during high-speed competition.

Coming Soon

Together, these studies highlight what iMotions Lab makes possible: seamless, multimodal research that works just as well in the lab as it does in dynamic, real-world environments. They’re also a reminder of why flexible tools matter – because the most meaningful insights often emerge in the moments you can’t plan for.

Two Decades of Innovation, Powered by You

For 20 years iMotions has been shaped by its community. From the researchers, and collaborators, to all the curious minds who have been part of the iMotions story over the last two decades, your contributions have shaped more than a platform, you’ve helped define what’s possible in behavioral science.

The tools we have built can support the boldest ideas, the toughest questions, and the most left-field insights to inspire the next generation of human understanding.

Here’s to the next twenty years of innovation, exploration, and discovery – together.
