fNIRS Module
fNIRS provides a portable, non-invasive way to measure brain activity that tolerates movement, enabling researchers to study cognitive function in naturalistic, real-world environments where traditional scanners cannot be used.

Understand brain activity with fNIRs
Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is used for research in applied neuroscience (focused on cortical regions of the brains), clinical research, sports and rehabilitation, BCI and HMI, psychology, and even neuromarketing. With iMotions, you have the option to combine fNIRS with other tools, such as EEG and Eye Tracking.
fNIRS indirectly measures oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin, providing a spatial and temporal measure of blood flow and oxygenation in the brain. This hemodynamic response can be measured with fNIRS hundreds of times per second, reflecting quick changes in brain activity.

Affordable, Adaptable Alternative
fNIRS may be a good option for your research if fMRI is too expensive, EEG is too sensitive to movement, or you’re looking for a tool to complement either of these technologies. fNIRS is commonly used with EEG or eye tracking, in naturalistic settings or VR environments.

Whether you’re quantifying cognitive workload, evaluating cognitive performance, or investigating mental well-being, fNIRS is worth considering. fNIRS is non-invasive, wearable, and wireless. No need for messy gel!
Flexible Data Export and Analysis
fNIRs data can be complex and there are a variety of tools available for analyzing fNIRs data that require different file types. That is why iMotions fNIRs module exports the two most useful filetypes:
- .csv same export as other iMotions Lab modules supporting multimodal research
- .snirf the most universal fNIRS filetype. It is compatible with the popular toolboxes such as Homer, FieldTrip, and MNE-Python.

Artinis fNIRS and OxySoft
We have partnered with Artinis to integrate their range of Brite fNIRS products into iMotions Lab, giving researchers access to the best fNIRS hardware on the market. The Brite family has solutions that are suitable for adults, children, and babies. iMotions works seamlessly with Artinis’ Oxysoft via LSL.
