Challenges

Dr. Marco Palma’s research field is agricultural economics with his biggest interest lying in food economics. He mainly focuses on the intersection of flavor, food production, nutrition and health, as well as the different behavioral processes that human beings are using for decision-making.

When Dr. Palma first got the idea of using biometric data to investigate his research queries, he needed a solution that was easy to use and could combine different sensor outputs in one simplified platform. He used eye tracking and EEG in previous research, but the time and financial effort to bring the sensors together meant that this was out of reach. Due to his economic background rather than a neuroscientific one, the learning curve was steep. His research questions and innovative ideas were limited by the technology available, necessitating new approaches to making them a reality.

Benefits

Dr. Marco Palma, as an economist, has had the opportunity to explore a whole new field and work with biometric data. Training sessions and support from iMotion brought him up to speed with data collection and analysis. In turn, the software offers a quick turn around time after data collection was completed. “When we started, it seemed to be a very difficult road ahead, but with iMotions’ support we understood how to use the technology and make better use of the hardware. The software facilitates the integration of all the hardware with the ability to put them together into a single space. We can now conduct a lot more research in a shorter period of time and only the sky’s the limit for our innovativeness. We needed a solution that collects as much valid data as possible and is as cost and time efficient as possible. We definitely found this in iMotions,” says Marco Palma, Associate Professor at Texas A&M University. “We’ve erased the gap in technology in our innovative experiments, and that has enabled us to see a bright future of executing new study ideas quicker than ever before.”

Solution

Dr. Palma began his search by evaluating different tools, but ended up picking iMotions as it was the only complete solution on the market offering exactly what he needed. iMotions offers straightforward data collection from multiple sensors, and this frictionless synchronization enabled Dr. Palma to conduct research that he would otherwise not have been able to do. With iMotions, he is able to effortlessly integrate eye tracking, GSR, EEG, facial expression analysis and ECG within one single software platform. Even the lack of staff with neuroscientific background didn’t ultimately pose a problem for Dr. Palma as the ease of use of the software, solid training, and the support of the team could ensured a quick start. Stricter experimental budgets dictate a principle of quality data collection as it is not feasible to accumulate losses due to data loss, participant deception or experimental setup errors. iMotions provides a stable and reliable solution for situations calling for high quality data collection and making the most out of a research budget.

Their specific setup includes screen-based eye tracking with a Tobii X2-60 eye tracker, EEG with ABM X10 headset, GSR and ECG with Shimmer 3 as well as surveys for self-reporting.
